Force: Microfleet App

Our Mojio Design Team created a Desktop Fleet app that allows small business owners and managers to track their vehicles from the moment they leave the lot to the moment they return. In addition to tracking vehicles, managers can also receive data about their drivers’ behavior (speeding, phone use, harsh brakes, etc.) as well as get reminders about vehicle schedules.

Force App for Managers

My task was to design a simple and easy to use Mobile App for the Drivers which would enable them to borrow vehicles for their shifts from the business lot, and return them at the end of their shifts.

User Testing & Information Architecture:

This app was great fun to do research for and to design. Prior to designing, we conducted research with 10 real users to see what features they really wanted. We talked to small business managers: from flower delivery to construction. We also talked to drivers. We compiled the research and realized that the driver app is basically like a digital library card: a fleet driver can “check out” a vehicle for a few hours or for a day, and then return it to the lot at the end of the day. He or she can also view all of their trips for the day as well as review their driving behavior to improve their safety and minimize wear and tear of their vehicle. Research helped us come up with the rough map of the app design:

Low Fidelity Mockups / Wireframes:

Before visual design, I started with simple wire framing using a tool called Whimsical. It allowed me to quickly narrow in on all the features I wanted to include in the final app design and see how the screens connect.

Visual Iterations Round One:

The goal was to create a very simple, inviting, approachable and easy to use app for fleet drivers. Some of them are first time users of a smart phone. Others are accustomed to using apps. I did my best to make this product appealing to both. The first round of visual design included custom made illustrations for several screens.

Final Visual Design:

After some thought, I further minimized the amount of unnecessary elements and simplified the design. I removed illustrations and embraced white space, highlighting the elegant functionality of the app. In this case, less is more!
